Naruto Creator Reveals Why Kakashi Hatake Wears A Mask

Kakashi Hatake is one of the fan favorites from Naruto. He was introduced quite early in the series, and he played a very important role throughout the series. Kakashi Hatake was the son of Sakumo Hatake, who was also known as the White Fang of the Leaf. Sakumo Hatake committed suicide, and Kakashi’s way of life changed. However, just like his father, Kakashi actually grew up to become a very talented Ninja.

In fact, he was Kage material during his adulthood, and he also ended up becoming the Sixth Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village after the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War, where Kaguya Otsutsuki was finally sealed by the combine efforts of Team 7. Kakashi Hatake’s character was created by Kishimoto in a very brilliant manner. But, one of the main things that always stood out about him was the mask that he wore.
Kakashi always seems to wear the mask. Ever since he was a child, he used to wear the mask that covered half of his face. In fact, when he was 5, he still wore it, and that before he had officially become a Ninja. Throughout his time in Naruto he wore the mask. You’d think he might’ve taken it off once he became a Jonin, or maybe when he was promoted to the rank of a Kage, but no.

This mask was an important part of Kakashi Hatake’s character, and that’s why he continued to wear it. But, the main question is, why exactly did Kakashi Hatake create the character with a mask in the first place? This question has never really been answer, but, Kishimoto did provide a sort of explanation as to why Kakashi Hatake always wore a mask.
Once, in an interview, Kishimoto Sensei was asked why it is that Kakashi Hatake is always seen with a mask.
Kishimoto’s reply was that he saw ninjas as being “mysterious” or something, so in his character design, he made Kakashi wear a mask, but he didn’t do that with other characters because it’s too difficult to get their expressions down when you can’t see their entire face. So, basically, you can tell that Kakashi Hatake wore a mask because it makes him look more like a ‘ninja’.
On the contrary, Naruto Uzumaki, the protagonist of the series actually wears an Orange jumpsuit, which doesn’t say ‘ninja’ at all. Yet, being Naruto, he pulls it off perfectly. For serious characters like Kakashi, Kishimoto Sensei resorted to using the concept of a real Ninja for his character. Just as ninjas need to be stealthy, and conceal their identity, Kakashi’s character does the same to his character, of at least it appears as the case. But, Kishimoto didn’t really create any other characters like him because, simply out, when it comes to emotions, a character’s face says a lot.
What are your thoughts on Kakashi Hatake and his mask? Do you think he should’ve removed it at some point? Let me know about your thoughts in the comments section below.
